Tokamak Energy (TE) has a good track record in spherical tokamak (ST) plasma<br>development over the past decade, and more recently in magnet development using high-temperature superconductors (HTS). We aim to accelerate<br>the realization of commercial fusion by combining these two technologies. Recent achievements at include demonstration of 10 million degrees<br>C ion temperature in ST40 (ST with the highest magnetic field), and demonstration of 24 T magnetic field by HTS magnet at 20 K. New<br>challenges are operation of ST plasma close to burning plasma conditions, understanding of low collisionality and gyro stabilization of<br>micro instabilities, the role of fast ions in the hot ion mode, as well as limitation of long pulse operation at high plasma performance.
