Report on the 22nd International Workshop on Ceramic Breeding Blanket Interaction (CBBI-22)

Keisuke Mukai

The 22nd International Workshop on Ceramic Breeding Blanket Interaction (CBBI-22) was held on October 6–8 at Kyoto University’s Obaku Plaza on the Uji Campus!

As a local organizing member, I had been preparing for it for about a year, so I was truly relieved and happy to see the event conclude successfully and with great enthusiasm.

About CBBI-22

CBBI (International Workshop on Ceramic Breeding Blanket Interaction) is a long-running international workshop held every two years, and this year marked its 22nd edition. It took place as a satellite meeting of the International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-22), which was held the previous week (September 28–October 3) in Shimizu, Shizuoka, Japan.

This year we welcomed a total of 46 researchers from across the globe, including Japan, the UK, Europe, Korea, the US, India, China, and Kazakhstan. In total, 41 oral presentations were delivered at CBBI-22.

The discussions were lively throughout the three days—so lively that the Q&A sessions often continued beyond the allotted time. We also had several participants from industry this time, reflecting the growing interest in fusion energy from the industrial sector.

Joint Program with BeWS

CBBI-22 was held jointly with the 17th International Workshop on Beryllium Technology (BeWS). The joint sessions provided a valuable opportunity for researchers from different fields to exchange ideas, creating an especially interactive atmosphere compared to past years

Technical Tour

On the final day, October 8, we organized a technical tour of the Heliotron J facility at Kyoto University’s Institute of Advanced Energy. It was a rare chance to see a large plasma device up close, and participants commented that they enjoyed learning about the development history of the device and that seeing the actual machine greatly deepened their understanding. The tour received extremely positive feedback!
