Abstract:
Private funding for fusion development is increasing rapidly. Tokamak Energy (TE) has a good track record in spherical tokamak (ST) plasma
development over the past decade, and more recently in magnet development using high-temperature superconductors (HTS). We aim to accelerate
the realization of commercial fusion by combining these two technologies. Recent achievements at include demonstration of 10 million degrees
C ion temperature in ST40 (ST with the highest magnetic field), and demonstration of 24 T magnetic field by HTS magnet at 20 K. New
challenges are operation of ST plasma close to burning plasma conditions, understanding of low collisionality and gyro stabilization of
micro instabilities, the role of fast ions in the hot ion mode, as well as limitation of long pulse operation at high plasma performance. TE
would like to tackle these challenges and advance fusion energy development utilising public-private partnerships.
