Title: “An ultra-high-field path for stellarators: challenges and perspectives”

Abstract: The discovery of superconductivity in rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) materials in liquid-nitrogen environments in 1986 opened a high-temperature superconducting path for fusion. After 20 years of development, the superconducting wire known as the REBCO coated conductor, with its high engineering current-carrying capacity and extremely high critical magnetic fields, was successfully commercialized in 2006. With subsequent decades of technical development, a toroidal-field model coil capable of achieving 20 tesla for tokamak reactors was demonstrated through a collaboration between Commonwealth Fusion Systems and MIT in 2024. However, magnet systems for stellarators are more complicated than those for tokamak reactors, whether the stellarators are based on QH, QA, or QI configurations or on the helical-type configurations currently being developed at NIFS. Solving these critical issues could enable an ultra-high-field path for stellarator systems. This talk presents the challenges and perspectives of using second-generation high-temperature superconducting REBCO coated conductors to achieve ultra-high magnetic fields exceeding 20 T for stellarators.
